Europe 2015: Bilbao, Spain

Bash in Bilbao!  :)  When friends asked us to visit during their trip home to London, it was a quick and easy YES!  Then we thought, if we were flying all the way across the pond, why not add a few more places to see, right?
Spain was an obvious choice and has been on our list forever.  After a lot of research and recc's, we decided to target San Sebastián - a lovely coastal northern town filled with global gastronomical acclaim.  To get there, we flew into Bilbao first so we could check out the Guggenheim - a Frank Gehry landmark and an architect's must-see.  We had about 36 hours to explore everything we could before hopping on a bus through Basque country to reach San Sebastián.
peacefully flying across the pond (for the most part)

La Salve bridge looks like a baby modern Golden Gate Bridge, no?

we LOVED the Richard Serra sculpture installations!  maze of rusty steel = best playground EVER!

Bilbao is pedestrian friendly and small enough to cover the city by foot in a day.  We explored the Casco Viejo (Old Town)Alhóndiga Bilbao (Philippe Starck's transformation of an early twentieth-century wine warehouse into a modern cultural center), sampled delectable pintxos, and even played in the playground next to the Guggenheim at 2am! (thank you jetlag).  Up next: San Sebastián!
